My reason for writing this was because I did not know enough about the fan clutch to know I could do some prior disassembly to reduce the weight and remove the fan making the removal process much simpler than trying to remove the clutch and fan as a single unit.

The fan clutch is very heavy. Not as heavy as a 50DN alternator, but considering you are trying to lift it into and out of position with your arms extended it is very difficult to lift and maneuver.

There are no specific mechanical skills involved other than knowing how to spin a wrench, but the procedure does require a healthy back. There was nothing on my coach above the fan clutch that I could have used to secure a rope to to assist in lifting the clutch.

This procedure may work for models other than mid year XL chassis, but that needs to be verified.
