Thread: No Heat... Just diesel

    Default No Heat... Just diesel

Heat was working fine and then we felt it starting to get cold. I could hear the webasto running. What I found was that cold air and diesel fuel dripping from the webasto exhaust pipe. Great... just before we get our first cold spell this happens. I got access to the unit and tried firing it back up this morning - nothing cool air and the smell of diesel.

It sounds to me that two things are happening (I think)
    1. Not igniting the diesel fuel
    2. Not detecting that there isn't a flame

I pulled some great information from the site for some troubleshooting techniques which I will try in the morning.

Thoughts from the experts on this site?

    Many Thanks!

Same thing happened to us in Colorado on the way back from POG. It's most likely a clogged orifice in the webasto. An additive in the winter fuel can cause it, also not using it for a period of time,i.e. summer. Rick May told us to run the wabasto monthly to avoid this problem, which we compound because our coach very seldom sees cold weather ( only by accident ).

I agree with Rick about runnning the Webasto once a month. Since we are in Florida, I never used the system on our 1999 but one or two times, but I did run the system each month and never had a problem once I figured out how it worked. Of course, I say this and the new owner may have a problem the next time he uses it. Hopefully not.

Hi Scott. I was looking for Mango Mike's Prevostman site where he has a great Article on Webasto maintenance and repair.
In the Article he explains 3 things which are important to the functioning of the webasto. a. Nozzle and cleaning & replacement
    b. Electrodes ; testing the ignitor to insure it is working c. photo cell; clean
Also, if your voltage is not at 12.6 volts, this will also effect the starting of the Webasto.

    Here is the site; http://www.prevoman.com/Pages/Webasto/Webapage1.html

Update: The issue was the control box. Thanks to the troubleshooting tips document of Prevoman I was able to diagnose the issue and repair it. Started right up! Thank you to all for your assistance.

This subject make me think of a question:
When driving in cold weather and heat is needed..... will the webasto keep the bus warm without the burner being on or will the engine coolant flow be enough to supply heat to the registers?
My prev. coach was a Country Coach (not Prevost) and the aqua-hot system would keep the coach warm by just turning on the thermostats.

Yes, the Webasco will flow the heated engine coolant thru the small radiators without the burner on. You will need to use your SMX thermostats.
