Robert, We have towed a Chevy 4X4 extended cab shortbox since new for six years with great success. Since there is no steering wheel lock, you can pull the key and keep the doors locked 'til you arrive at your destination..
We recently bought a 2001 Chevy standard cab 4-by as a work truck, and probably will tow it, too. Surprise to us, this truck had the G-80 option listed on the glovebox tag, a mechanically operated Eaton locking diff. The truck is in very well cared for shape for less than 10 grand. Not too sure we will let employees drive it.
