    Default Leaking Hub Seals

Been noticing oil streaks on front wheel and tag.
Removed chrome Hub Cap and I see that oil in hub was at or near the ADD line.
Added Hub Oil, torqued the hex nuts that cover the outer Hub Gasket and am still getting streaks on wheels while driving.

No leaks on inside seals of front or tag.

Hate to check them every 1000 miles or so.
Is the fix as simple as changing the gasket?

    NO - IT's NOT A PREVOST -
My 97 Liberty also had same problem with front hubs.

    Lee,

I had the same situation. I changed the rubber caps (red) to the next larger size (blue) and the problem went away. $4 fix. You don't see that often.
The rubber caps are sold in most truck stops.

As the cap ages. it leaks oil around the sight glass or plastic. You just need to replace the whole cap around $30 from Prevost.

It will spin oil out around where the plastic meets the metal.

Assuming the rear hub seal is OK, it could be the gasket behind the cap, the plug, or the seal between the plastic and metal has failed. Unless it is the plug, a new gasket available at a truck parts store and RTV silicone sealant is all that is needed.

My RH cap leaked between the plastic and the metal so I removed it, cleaned it completely with solvent and sealed it with a thin bead of RTV silicone. That was 4 years ago and it hasn't leaked since.

Clean it up real good and go for a drive. Then see where it is leaking. I assume you know the plug needs to have that pin hole open otherwise pressure builds up in the hub.

I'll start by replacing the colored caps - no evidence of leaks around gasket.

    Thanks,

    Lee
