Shop around for insurance and do not accept the first quote you are given. Different agents (Thum and Explorer) gave me different quotes from the same company, Interstate, with the coverages being equal, so I am comparing apples to apples. Interstate also has another company that aqents can quote from to further muddy the water.
I went through this situation when Explorer raised my rate over 50% on the first renewal without any claims, speeding tickets, etc. It then became a bidding war between Thum and Explorer with Thum winning. For me, it was a real eye opening experience. I always felt that once a quote was made that was it and it would not be changed. This was not the case in my situation.
Explorer lowered their quote to be more competitive.
If they could do it the second time around, why did they not do it the first time? Burned once, shame on you; burned twice, shame on me.
Bottom line - shop for insurance.
