View Full Version : Who's heading out to POG3 from CA?

OK, it's probably a bit early to be planning this, but for those who like to plan early, I'm trying to see who want's to be part of the CA caravan to POG3 in April.

I've spoken with Ken Zittrer, and it looks like Ken, Mike Simmons and I will be leaving on Thursday April 19th. The plan tentatively is to drive either 3 or 4 days, arriving Saturday night, or Sunday mid day. It's about a 20 hour drive from Southern CA to Kerrville, and we tend to want to drive a little less each day, but stop and enjoy the company enroute.

I assume others may want to leave earlier, or later, but this thread might be a good place to hookup and maybe get a couple of groups going.

If you're interested, please let us know!

Thanks,

mikedee

Ray,
I will be driving our coach to POG III. We would be happy to caravan with you. It looked like a three day drive to us, maybe Beaudry's, east of El Paso and Kerrville? How about meeting in the desert at Spotlight 29 Casino RV lot and heading out.

We are leaving on the 21st for POGIII, weather permitting. Another few inches of snow and temps in the teens today. Tomorrow, we are expecting winds that can gust to 75mph. Geez, we've had enough. Normal winters here, are in the 50's and 60's this time of year with sun.
We leave for Palm Springs next Teusday, weather permitting, hopefully it will be warmer there than last month. We froze in PS and it even snowed in Scottsdale during the last day of the Barrett-Jackson Auction.

Hey Mike & Gary,

Let's stay in touch with this. Mike, I was thinking about Beaudry's a I've heard it's a nice place to stay. Where is Spotlight 29 Casino? I'm not familiar that.

Mike, is that Spotlight 29 Casino out near Indio? I did a web search and located that. Seems like a reasonable place to hook-up.

I quick check with Maps and Streets show we coudl be out there about 1030A to meet, and would put us at Beaudry RV Resort around 4PM. Seems like a reasonable days drive.

Ray,
Spotlight is right at the bottom of the hill on the East side of Indio used to be called Trump. It is off Dillon Rd. 33.7N 116.2W They have a large RV only area that would be a great spot to meet. Some might want to come the night before and stay in the lot. Beaudry's is a great place with good on resort facilities. They would probably show us the Country Coach's they have on the lot.

We might want to stop in AZ for cheaper fuel, and probably use the Hwy 85 cut off to Gila Bend.

Hi Cal bunch. Count us in. We will be @ Beaudry's waiting for you. Were here now, but we'll store the Coach in Tucson and head home at the end of Feb. and return to Beaudry's just ahead of POG3. We'll hook up with you then.

Harry, great to hear from you. We'll definitely plan on first night at Beaudry's which will be Thursday April 19th. On POG2 caravan I made reservations for everyone, but I don't feel a great need to do that. What do you think? Should we make the decisions as to where to stay, and everyone fend for their own reservation, or should I try to get us in as a group?

I've been looking at a stop for 2nd night. Not much between Beaudry and Kerrville! Las Cruces is a bit too close. I found two possibilities. What does everyone think? First right off of I-10 (on the route) is Ft Stockton. There is a KOA there that is reputed to have large spaces for a KOA. There were two other places with good reviews on rvparkreviews.com, which indicated they were great for an overnighter. That includes A&M Camper Park, and Commanche Land RV Park.

Another possibility is to head a little north and split off on I20. This goes up to Midland/Odessa area. There seems to be a really nice park in Odessa called the Midessa Oil Patch RV Park. Total travel time would increase maybe 30 minutes or so, BUT the trip into Kerrville is about 5 hours, putting us in at reasonable time on Saturday?

Anyone have any other suggestions for the trip across West Texas?

PS: I guess another option is to go for shorter day on Friday, and another shorter one on Saturday, arriving in Kerrville on Sunday, not Saturday.

I made that trip last year coming to Calif. from Florida. I will look up the places I stayed along the way.

Last time I drove thru there we stayed in Ft. Stockton but parked at WalMart for the night. Mike and I stayed in a very nice, very large Texas rest area / visitor center just across the state line north of El Paso. It is different in that you get off onto the feeder road then turn into the rest area. But it has separate truck and RV parking areas.

Hi Ray
I would be happy to make reservations for the group here at Beaudry's for the 19th of April. I would need a number count and commitments from those coming. I'll check on the group rates and see if it provides a break. They have a nice resturant on site and another one down the road. I'll also check with Tim, the Prevost salesman here, to set up a show and tell of their Prevost inventory.
Shirley and I are looking forward to seeing you all. ( Texas talk )

Brian,

I've been feeling a little clogged up lately. Does it show? And a touch grouchy

I don't know how the distance works out for the eastbound caravan, but on one of our trips across TX we stayed in Van Horn.

Cheap camgrounds, close to the interstate, and plenty of freebies when we checked in, including popcorn and discounts at local restaurants.

Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a CONVOY!

I am still thinking of leaving early and going by Marathon for some work, but if that doesn't end up happening, we would hook up with everyone at Tuscon, as our bus stays in Lake Havasu city. Sounds like fun.

Ray -
Decent spots on your trek are Hacienda at exit 140 Las Cruces, Van Horn KOA in the G row which are 100 ft sites, and Ft. Stockton KOA which has several sites. Other than that, pretty slim pickings.

I would be happy to make reservations for the group here at Beaudry's for the 19th of April.

That would be great Harry. I'm not sure we'll have an absolute count before you leave Tucson, however.

At the moment, let's see if this looks right. Maybe you can make an initial reservation, and then we'll update as necessary?

So far I show: (by login name)

1. Ray Davis (Ray and Kathy)
2. Bluevost (Ken and Janet)
3. simmonsmj (Mike and Jean)
4. MikeDee (Mike and Dee)
5. win42 (Harry and Shirley)
6. garyde (Gary and Lise Ann)

and currently a maybe

7. Jello Jeep (Warren and Kelly)

Anyone else I'm missing?

To those on the list above, if you could send me your email addresses (send a PM is probably easiest), so that I can setup a group email thing here to make coordinating a bit easier.

To those from last year, I've got you already, but I need:

win42 (Harry)
MikeDee (Mike)

So, actually not too many. If you guys could hit me with your email addresses, that would be great.

Harry, I'm curious if you've booked anything at Beaudry. I have not yet booked anything for the remainder of the trip. I'm assuming we really don't want to do the Walmart or the rest area thing. Last year we generally got in by 3PM or so, it might be a bit later this time, as we're traveling quite a bit further. But, I'm under the assumption we'd rather park at an RV park. Let me know if I'm wrong in that assumption

Thanks,

Were home from Beaudry Tucson. When we asked for a group rate they indicated it would require twelve or more rigs. As soon as we get closer to the final number I'll call them and try to block out some sites. It would probably be a surer thing if each person made their own reservation. They have different rates for pull throughs as opposed to backins. Plenty of room to back in on all sites. My email is shoppe@hughes.net. We will be returning to Beaudry on or before April

OK Harry, thanks for the update. I'll try to figure out if we can make a group reservation, or we should make individual. I'll send an email to the group to determine how everyone wants to go. In our last caravan I made reservations, but they didn't charge me until we showed. As long as we show up with the right number, that seemed to work.
