Energy Harvesting Wall Switches

If you can't or don't wish to fish wires, these EnOcean switches might be the perfect solution. The simple act of depressing the switch creates enough power to send a 900MHz signal - no wires or batteries:

Those are pretty ingenious! They also harvest energy from the light, even indoors. A potential downside is that I didn't notice much in the way of receivers.

The received signal is then decoded, demultiplexed, and responded upon by some home automation software (did I mention openHAB, LOL!). This way you'd have many switches, each encoding their particular action, a transceiver feeding received signals into some software (openHAB), and the software taking the appropriate action by acting on the event: turning on/off a light, activating a schedule, shedding loads, etc.
