I recently helped a friend with air conditioner problems. The problem with his basement air turned out to be a torn supply duct that happened to run near the return rregister at the point of the tear. After we repaired the supply duct the noise near the return register dropped considerably.
Fast forward to yesterday when I was putting things back together after running some new coax through my coach's ceiling. I noticed cold air escaping around my roof air's connection to the coach's ducts. After fixing this leak the noise level was obviously lower, quite a bit lower. I also noticed that the air volume at the supply registers was greater. What a great find given this is the AC unit above the bed. I had assumed my 15 year old unit was on its last leg.
Sometimes the simplest of fixes can yeild the greatest results.
