If your don't have a shore power protection device, you really should have. Personally, I prefer the units from Progressive Industries over those from TRCI, but PPL has a great sale on the TRCI units through the end of the month. Here's the TRCI Surge Guard that's on sale. That is a great deal. I just saw the same TRC unit on sale on one of the other websites, and it was $70 higher. I use one of best PI units and carry their cheaper (less than $100) one as a spare. I've had to use the spare two times over the last eight years, and I was glad that I had it. You never know when you are going to run into electrical problems. My PI unit has saved my bus electrical system at least once, so it has more than paid for itself.

Is the TRCI that much better than the Progressive Industries protector? Are we really getting value for the extra money? Anyone ever bust one of each open to see what's really inside?

I personally think the PI unit is better. If for no other reason it has a lifetime warranty. Living in the lightning capital I have used the warranty. It was a painless and quick repair.

Both units are close in price near $400.

Are talking about the same Progressive Industries unit? $113 from Amazon

Dick,

The one for $113 is the cheap one, like I said I carry for a spare. This one is the better PI unit FOR $315:http://tweetys.com/portable-50-amp-electrical-management-system.aspx

A common misperception is that these power managment devices are all the same. Some are power management devices that protect the coach from far more than surge. Then there are the surge suppressors. Personally, paying for surge protector is a poor investment. Spent a couple hundred more (or less) and get a power protection device.

BTW, TRCI doesn't help matters by calling all of the products Surge Guard.
