All,
I recently was told that the charge air cooler on Prevost's had to be replaced between 40000 and 50000 miles. Is that correct?
Thanks,
Reese Cantrell

Reese,
No worries, that's what I thought you meant but I wanted to make sure no one was telling you a story. Yes the CAC that went on the DDEC 4 and 5's are crap. Prevost knows it but won't back it. Between the POG and PC guys probably 10 of us have changed them out in the last year. Do your sesrch on CAC and it's all there. I don't remember off the top of my head the replacement name but they are solid. Just do the spray test when cold and if it's an old CAC I'd bet my bus it's leaking. 2400.00 at Prevost to fix and 1350.00 if you do it yourself. I will answer your delam tread up there.

Duralite makes the good one and it cost about $2000 including labor to have one installed at Prevost Jax.

Reese,
The CAC is not a periodic replacement item. Some XL-II coaches had leaky CACs. This is limited to units that are mounted side by side. When viewed from the radiator door the CAC will be left of the radiator or towards the front of the coach.

Gil,
Thanks for letting me know the position of the CAC. Will make it a point of looking for CAC when inspecting a coach.

Reese

Yes U do. It cools the air that comes out of the turbo before going into the engine creating more horsepower. It is an air to air heat exchanger. Also commonly referred to as after-cooler.
Its in front of the face of the radiator.

Larry, just add to Joe's comments, yours may not be sandwiched against the radiator, but most applications are sandwiched. My 98 shell has the CAC stacked above the radiator. On some newer coaches it's next to the radiator.
The terms used to describe the Charge Air Cooler vary, but CAC is now common. CAT calls it a Air To Air Cooler, after cooler would also be correct. You might even here intercooler, although that technically be incorrect.

Larry, I'm glad you asked if you had one. I didn't realize I had one. I was thinking they were only on newer coaches.

All DD series 60 have them. The problem ones are from 2004 on. Prevost switched suppliers and they turned out to be junk.

8Vs have them too. Unless it is a real old old engine any turbo diesel has one. 8V is tucked under the intake manifold.
IMO Those 04 and newer should be fixed at no charge to the customer. Should be a recall. Just not right.

Somethings just suck, like Obamacare, Reid/Pelosi, defective CAC's and XL11 de-lam. But it's hard to wipe the grin off our faces behind the wheel.
