I had the honor of being on the Nimitz class nuclear carrier, the USS George Washington, for the 50th anniversary of the storming of the beaches of Normandy. What a dramatic event from the bridge of this massive ship. We and an horizon filled with ships steamed past the beach at Normandy to serve as a backdrop for a memorial service on the beach to honor those that lost their lives in the D Day invasion. What an informative three weeks I had on the carrier. Having the privilege to be in or on most every compartment made me appreciate the sacrifices and dedication to country the sailors, pilots, and seals endure while at sea.

A fairly unknown town that lost more of their town's people, per capita, than any other town is the small town of Bedford, VA. I stumbled upon this town before they were able to afford a tribute to their fallen town's people. If you're ever passing near here, it may be worth a stop to see the tribute that's now in place. It's on the scenic route US-460 and US-221 between Roanoke and Lynchburg, VA.

We took the kids to the WWII Museum in New Orleans on the way back from Florida during Spring Break. What a fantastic museum and experience. Everything is really top notch and they are currently expanding it. We just went to the Smithsonian (Indian, American History and Air and Space) last week. The WWII museum really puts the Smithsonian to shame. Much better exhibits and much more detailed information. The 4D theater is very good. They have bus parking just down the street under the US90. If you stop at the Museum they will give you a parking pass.
