I have to replace my house batteries and need to know if there is anything "sacred" about using 8D size batteries. Also, with the price of Lifeline batteries, are there viable alternatives?
Thanks in advance.

John, There is nothing sacred about anything on our coaches and if you as an owner want to modify your coach there is no rule book that says what you must do.
Each of our coaches was built to what the converter felt was the best compromise for how we (collectively, not specifically) use our conversions. We have the size and number of batteries the converter felt was necessary to allow us to occasionally dry camp. If we never dry camped every one of us could get along with one battery, a simple charger and no inverter. But if we always dry camp, none of us will have the ultimate because ideally we would have more batteries than we can count and solar roof panels to charge them.
What type, size and number you install in your coach is going to be what you decide suits your lifestyle. Most of us have not added or subtracted from the number and size of batteries the coach was built with but most of us have gone to AGM or in some cases gel cell batteries. Some still use lead acid. Whatever you decide you just have to make sure you have appropriate charging capability and if you have a 24 volt coach that you keep in mind you have to have both series for 24V and parallel for 12V wiring, and equalizers with sufficient size to maintain the balance
