View Full Version : Maine Rally This Summer

Jim Skiff

Now is a good time to mention that we are hoping on having a mini-rally here in Maine this summer. It is a great place to be (in the summer) and there is a lot to see.

We could do a couple of days in Boothbay Harbor and a couple of days in Bar Harbor.

It could turn into a larger event if folks are interested.

What say you?

Jim

A Maine mini sounds good to me. Looks like July and August are the warmest months.

The bride and I were talking about doing a short road trip early summer to Maine, Nova Scotia and PEI. We will probably do this in June or very early July given our Colorado trip planned for the first of August.

Ok, Jennifer has Maine very high on her list...in fact, I talked her out of a fall trip a couple of years ago until we bought a bus. So we have that base covered now.

What is the famous park on the coast up there? She has read a lot about it and wants to go so we would definitely be interested.

We will be in Canada for the summer, but could drop into Maine for a Rally, but need to be in Nova Scotia the last week of July to meet up with Eric and Debbie for Folk Harbour Festival in Lunenburg. We are tentatively planning a tour of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island to follow that.

If anyone else in interested in joining us let me know, we may psudo-waggon-master a tour of Nova Scotia.

THE place to be on the 4th of July is Bristol, RI!

The Annual Bristol, Rhode Island Fourth of July Celebration, established in 1785, is the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the United States.

Check it out! The 225th Bristol, RI Fourth of July Celebration (http://www.july4thbristolri.com/)

We are working on this and are really excited about POGGERS coming to Maine.

A new member " Woody " has arranged for dry camping at Owls Head Transportation Museum between 7/10/10 and 7/17/10. We will choose a couple of days during that time. Thanks Tad.

So right now we are trying to get spaces in Boothbay and Bar Harbor.

This will be a summer blast! More as we find out what is available.

Pictures at Cow Shit corner are extra but can be arranged.....For a fee. :D

Skiffer,

Since you own the Maine Rally, lucky boy, are we now considering a window between July 10 and 17? If possible, we need to nail down some dates so plans can be made. Are the campgrounds you mentioned still open for reservations this time of year or are they shut down?

Mr. Skiff, I went on POG, clicked on the Website for Shore Hills Campground, called Jean at 207 380 6375, she answered her phone and is in Fl. right now, downloaded the sheet to fill out our information, wrote the check and mailed the reservation form, advised her I knew Jim Skiff and we were members of POG. I think Karen and I are in. If I can get more time off this afternoon I will register for the next Campground. Easy as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.

Jon Wehrenberg
02-10-2010, 10:43 AM

Business is slow so I had time to register at Narrows Too. Called 207 667 4300 and talked to Jeanna. Said she didn't know Jim Skiff and never heard of POG. I convinced her I was telling the truth so she put me on hold to call someone else. Short wait. She told me to call Laura at 207 288 8106. Laura took my information and credit card # so I think we are in at this location also. Easy as 1,2.

It is not your responsibility to start spending money for food and such. Let us know as we get closer to the "event " how much participation is needed to make you whole.

02-13-2010, 09:08 PM
Lloyd- You said you need to be in Nova Scotia around the time of the Maine Rally. At Bar Harbor, there is a high speed catameran ferry http://www.catferry.com/ that goes non stop back and forth to Nova Scotia twice a day I recall. It's around $500 one way. You could go one way and drive back one way instead of seeing the same scenery twice and although it's pricey consider the fuel costs and time savings. For passengers only it's under $100 (round trip I THINK) if you guys wanted to plan a day trip but it probably looks just like Maine except for a bunch of "Eh?" talk.

Looks like the Royal Coach Club is going to be there September 12th - 18th in case you want to intermingle. They'd probably all sign up for POG if ya'll waned to make the snowball bigger. http://www.royalecoachclub.com/rally.cfm

I just edited this after reading more of this thread I was behind on and realized everyone is going in July. Didn't think a date was set yet.

Has anyone ever tried making an annual "Mega Prevost Rally" combining all the various clubs ? Could just make it the same place and time each year to maybe increase turn out. Maybe it would be too out of control and hard to organize. I guess I should make it to our own rally first before suggesting such a thing.

I have contacted Cabbage Island Clam Bakes (http://www.cabbageislandclambakes.com/clambakes.htm) and they will be accepting your reservations for Tuesday, July 20 for the late afternoon/evening boat. (5:00PM)
The owner, Wayne Moore is a friend of mine and they have added an evening boat to accomodate us as folks will be arriving that day.

The price per person is about $60.00 but I have heard the experience is well worth it. We get a cruise around the harbor in their boat and a New England Clam Bake including two lobsters per person.
Chicken can be substituted.

Phone 207-633-7200 for reservations.
They take cash or check only.

This will be a fun way to kick off our Maine rally and not the last time lobster will be consumed!

One of the traditions on the island is tea and pop overs at the Jordan Pond House. It is a spectacular relaxed setting and want to know what attendees think.
Link to their site (http://www.jordanpond.com/index.html)

Also my sister Jen will let us use her house next to the beach in West Tremont on Mount Desert Island for drinks and light food. I'm hoping we can get her husband Jon Sainken to rev up the boat for some rides on the western shore which has some great views.

Since the attendees of this mini are musically inclined, music on the deck or beach (rock beach this is Maine) would be encouraged. Are you listening Jay!

Skiffer,

The Horner party is going to have to cancel out on this one.

I've been deployed to Hammond, LA to work with a company handling insurance claims regarding the oil leak. Hammond is the training center and the final deployment location could be anywhere along the coast, from Texas to the Carolinas and all points in between. They gave us less than 48 hours notice to be in Louisiana. We expect this to last several months or longer.

We were looking forward to this rally and seeing everyone very much, but we'll have to make it next time.

We are really looking forward to seeing everyone in Maine soon. Bring something for the charity auction in Owls Head. Funny, stupid or excellent ....it doesn't matter. We didn't have many coaches in Pahrump, Nevada but we did a lot of good at the local Senoir Center and made the six'oclock news.

Is there generally a theme for the pot luck? If it is NE seafood, I may need some guidance or you might end up with chicken fried lobsta or BBQ little neck clams.....

Jim Skiff
06-22-2010, 05:30 AM
Gordon,

Both of those sound interesting....but straight with butter is the preferred method.
No theme........just bring what you are good at. We'll probably have to break it down per category (appetizers, salad, maine course and dessert) but with this small group it should be easy)

Here is a link to the planes rides that the Owls Head Transportation Museum will be donating to the charity auction after our potluck. Click here. (http://www.ohtm.org/FlyCircPage.html)
Tad is working with the museum to have a pilot or two on hand depending on demand. If we let him know how many may be interested he can make arrangements.

By the way:
There is an airport near Boothbay: Wiscasset
We will be parked next to a landing strip at Owls Head.
The Bar Harbor airport is very close to the campground we are staying in up there.
So if anyone wants to fly in please do!

Ok Skiffer, I'm getting grilled by my co pilot. Let me be sure I have this right. Tuesday night, is the Cabbage Island Clam Bake. Wednesday night is the Pot Luck dinner, unless I missed something we don't have a list posted on what to bring. That leaves Thurday and Friday night up to our imagination. Needless to say we all appreciate you setting up this mini rally let us know what else we need to do.

Jim Skiff

Rick,

We have left things more open as this is a mini-rally and some folks probably need time to fit in some unscheduled trips & tours.

Yes, Tuesday is the clambake in Boothbay, Wednesday is the potluck at Owls Head where we can will have a fun little charity auction, tour the museum and some will purchase plane rides in vintage aircraft.
Thursday afternoon we will get together for refreshments and snacks on Mount Desert Island. I was hoping some people would want to go to the Jordan Pond House (http://www.jordanpond.com)on Friday before or after a drive through the park.

Let me look over the list for the potluck and saddle some people with the heavy lifting. Mango already told me you would be setting up a martini sluice similar to the one we had in OKC............but I guess the POG Margarita machine would suffice! :)

The park is also known as a great place to "cruise" on bicycles on the old carriage paths. Jennifer and i are planning on doing some of that, so anyone else is interested, bring along the bike.

Appetizers - ok, in the spirit of the seafood theme of the rally, mountain oysters it is....

We have been on the road now since last Saturday making our way towards Maine. Drove through some of the worst rain I have ever encountered on 40 b/w Knoxville and Asheville on Monday. Witnessed 2 cars hydroplane into the guardrail and the end result of a couple others. CB was crackling with information on water on the road, idots driving, stopping in the driving lanes, limited vision, etc, etc. Bus handled flawlessly thankfully. After a climb up a winding narrow gravel mountain road, we were rewarded by a spectacular view from a hilltop site for the week at "Campfire Lodgings." (Site P1 if anyone is familiar). Beautiful view of the French Broad River from the mountain top right on the patio.

Today we are driving up 81 to Gettysburg, and the clam bake lady calls confiming our reservation for next Tuesday. I confirmed, and she says you want the Lobstaah right? I laughed and asked her to repeat herself just to hear it in the proper Maine dialect after reading it spelled out so many times on here.

Gettysburg tomorrow, and then we start making our way towards a Monday arrival at BoothBay a day early of the "official start." Really looking forward to it.

Skiffer,

We have arrived in Boothbay Harbor. Carole started working on the lobster population immediately for lunch. Lobster Roll at the Sea Basket. Doesn't look like anyone else is here yet. Better hurry, Carole is looking for Lobster Pancakes for breakfast tomorrow!

Hey Loc,

We are from the "Sandhills" area of NC. Lots of desert like sand there so we brought some with us for dessert!

Weather was hot and humid today. Tomorrow's forecast is for less of both. Yeah!

Will Garner

Deb, Eric, Jay, Patrick and Sherry have arrived. They are now pursuing lobsters at Robinson's. Carole and I ate lunch there today after going to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. If anyone is a car fan (King of da' Bling!) you missed an antique car show across the street at the Boothbay Village Railroad Museum. I missed it too since I watched the end of the British Open and the cars left for a parade in Boothbay Harbor Downtown, rats. The museum does have 50+ antique vehiclesi of their own that are worth the walk uphill to their storage building. If the The King of da' Bling, or other flatlanders can't make the hill, there is a narrow gauge steam powered railroad that will take you to the top of the hill and let you detrain, for a nominal fare of course.

So far the lobsters are winning the battle, so come on reinforcements we need your help!

Jim,

Carole says to count us in on the oysters - even though they are not related to lobsters, as far as we know!

I saw the dynamic duo of buses on the highway when I was headed south today. I waved like crazy hoping they would see me! I was looking out for them and just before I made my turn, there they were.
Robinson's is awesome, I know they will enjoy it.

Will, let folks know that everyone is welcome to go for oysters (or whatever they would like) at King Eider's pub in Damariscotta tomorrow afternoon early evening.

It's exciting to have people up heah..........ayuh.

Carole and I just did the Niagara to Boothbay run. It is about 628 miles. We did it in two segments, broken up at Sturbridge Village Mass. From Sturbridge it is about three hours the rest of the way to Boothbay. BTW, toll on I-90 from Buffalo to Mass is $78 plus change.

Safe travels and looking forward to seeing you here at the Mini-Maine Rally.

We are overnighted in a rest stop on 84 just before the MA border. Don't know why I didn't make my reservations in BB to start tonight as it would have been an easy trip from Gettysburg - just wasn't sure given our lack of experience on the roads up in this neck of the woods.

We are going from Bar Harbor to Niagara Falls before heading south. Sounds like it is doable in a day. Look forward to seeing / finally meeting everyone tomorrow!

Directions to Jennifer Skiff's house:

Directions from Ellsworth:
1. Drive to MDI and go Straight.
2. Drive approximately 5 miles until you go through Somesville. There will be a yellow blinking light at the fire station. The intersection is Pretty Marsh road. Take a right.
3. Drive approximately 12 minutes. Do not take the first Cape Road with all the camp signs on it. Instead, go about 3 more miles and take the next Cape Road.
4. Drive until you see the water. Once you see the water, we're the 3rd dirt driveway on the right. Please park your car on the road if possible.

I will be at the campground to lead folks down there at around 4:30.

We bailed out of Narrows II early this AM and 732 miles later are camped near our final "destination" of the trip - Niagara Falls. We had a great time finally shaking hands with many POG folks and seeing Maine. Acadia is a beautiful park and we enjoyed some hiking and biking over the weekend. Maine is a scenic place and we are certainly not used to the Moose crossing signs down in in Tejas.

Jim, special thanks for all you did to add a personal touch to the rally in your homeland. The Cabbage Island gig was outstanding, as were all the events.

Jon,
I had my jeep in one wheel drive, it was the wheel you could see daylight under.

Jon Wehrenberg
07-27-2010, 02:29 PM
That's what all Jeep owners say. If that was the case you could have let the air out of the other 3 tires so the one drive wheel would be back on the ground. There was enough hot air at the rally you would not have had trouble airing them back up.

To be pulled out of a ditch by a soccer mom Korean car has got to have hurt a little.

pwf252
07-27-2010, 03:05 PM
Nope Jon, didn't feel a thing. Way tough skin here from many years of running a construction company. You know I didn't think about letting air out of the other three tires. Thanks for that tip. I will use it in Colorado if I run into a similar issue.

Eric and I just viewed the remaining portion of this thread. Thanks for all the great pics that everyone posted. We had a wonderful time in Maine and Nova Scotia. Thanks to Jim for organizing the Maine section, and to Lloyd and Pamela for our most excellent tour of Nova Scotia. It was a wonderful trip for us. We delivered Jay to boarding school yesterday. We survived! Jay was so excited to be there and the faculty and staff made us all feel very comfortable. But it is strangely quiet in our house today. We are very thankful for the wonderful memories we made as a family with our extended POG family on our trip.
