I've seen posts where some of you have changed your filters while on the road. Do you carry fuel in a can to fill your filter before you put the new one on or is there a way to purg the air out before you start the engine?

Pull up next to the pump. Seriously. This is the time to use the RV diesel pump at the Flying J or the local convenience store diesel pump because you sure don't want the flow from the truck nozzle to prime the filter. Don't carry fuel. It is too dangerous and it stinks.

This is a note for all that have never had dirty fuel filters or who tried running their bus fuel to the point of exhaustion. Life is really bad if you fail to react at the fist sign of fuel exhaustion. Get to a fuel pump pronto. Plugged fuel filters will start to exhibit signs by the engine jerking or getting very sluggish. Get off the throttle to the extent necessary and do not hesitate to shut it down if necessary prior to total fuel exhaustion.

If you catch it in time and just need to change filters just fill new filters with clean fuel, reinstall the filters and start it on low idle and let it idle for 15 to 30 seconds. It should catch immediately and within a short period of time any air in the system will have been purged.

If fuel has been exhausted on the secondary filter base (the part the filter screws into) is a port for priming. Rig up any fitting arrangement you can and push a couple of gallons of fuel through that port under pressure. I use a pump sprayer such as you would use to spray Round-Up and they are available at any Walmart or hardware store.

If you run the bus out of fuel, even if you fill the tank you cannot restart it without repriming the system.
