There was a successful launch of the space shuttle at 7:55 pm EST tonight. It was quite a sight even from Port St. Lucie as the "fireball" was clearly visible for several minutes.

Hard to believe that the launch site was some 100 miles away! Must have been spectacular up close and personal.

There was considerable conversation between the launch control personnel regarding a hatch that apparently wasn't latched. The conversation essentially said "don't worry about it.... we don't expect excessive damage or vibration.... we'll just alert the crew and we'll be clear for launch"

In any event, it was quite a sight from here :)

Wonder what that probably-now-missing-hatch was worth ??

Paul,

Are you and Janice planning to attend the shuttle launch on Feb. 12th in Titusville? I think it is going to be really neat. We are excited about seeing it.

Tuga,

Yep, we have our reservations for Titusville. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the "Space Coast Mini POG Rally" :D

All we need now is for NASA to cooperate ........

If you ever have the opportunity to go see a launch - GO! We drove up to Titusville and saw the night launch. Words can't describe it! We parked very close to Space View Park and walked just two blocks. This park is right next to the causeway near the Titusville Historic district. There are several monuments to the various space programs and an Astronaut Walk of Fame. One of the closest places for viewing and you are 3 miles from I-95. You can see the launch pad in the distance. There is also a loudspeaker so you can hear Shuttle Launch Control. After liftoff, we even heard the engines rumbling! The coolest part was the cheer of the crowd and we were thrilled to see so many children there as well. We met people from as far away as Vancouver, BC.

Karin,

It would be great if you could join in on the POG mini-rally in Titusville for the launch in February. Should be a real good time!

Pete,

Several POG members (us included) are getting together at The Great Outdoors in Titusville, FL.

Dates are February 11 thru 14, 2009 and reservations are filling fast. There is a shuttle launch scheduled on or about the 14th, but a lot can happen to change that.

Worst case scenario is a mini-POG rally that you probably won't want to miss!

Hey Y'all!

The next STS Mission is scheduled for February 12th (www.nasa.gov). Don't waste time - book now. This is also race week (NASCAR) in Daytona Beach and TGO will fill up fast.
