For those of you that have never changed out an air governor, here are a few pictures:

Bendix Governor - 105 - 125 psi

To adjust your pressure, under the rubber cap is the adjusting screw

My governor is mounted to the rear of the air compressor

Some governors are remote mounted, but mine is directly bolted to the compressor. The governors are cheap, this rebuilt unit was 16.00. I got mine at Fleet, but most truckstops and parts places have them. There are different types and pressures, just make sure your part number is the same. I changed it as a PM item while chasing an aux air leak. This took about a half hour, mostly because you have to R & R your fittings as the governor does not come with fittings, only plugs that need installed in the unused ports.

Even Jeep could do this!:p

And I thought we had to wait until next November to change out our air Governor. Governor Good Hair (Texas) should be scared.

Thanks to everyone. I will change out the governor prior to my next trip.

If you find a replacement that will begin to pump air when the pressure drops to 115 like the current one originally did I would be interested in that information.

All I have ever come in contact with drop down to 100 before starting to build up air again.

The only options at Bendix are as follows:

282436 100/120
284358 105/125

These are both high temp governors.

How did you get to the compressor? With it on the back of the 8V92, I had to either be in a pit or on a lift to even see the back of it much less get at the governor.

Hello Jerry,

I can reach mine from the passenger side door to the engine compartment. It is tight since I have OTR air. I have not changed it yet since I am working in NJ this week. But, I did get to it to make sure I could do the replacement job. The air compressor sits just ahead (toward the front of the bus) of the alternator. To change the compressor the alternator has to be removed, but not true for the governor.

Tom's pictures reference a pressure adjustment.

Could Kim adjust the pressure on his existing unit and not replace it?

Does a new governor come out of the box adjusted and ready to go?

What pressure can be adjusted? Hi & Low both or what?

Only the high limit can be adjusted and further than you would ever need.

Looks like you can get one that clicks on at 105 instead of 100 I like that. Good work Tom I will verify that with Orren.

Tom were you previously aware of this or did you just learn that too?

On a side note. These are good to carry for spares but beware there is a rubber diaphragm inside that can dry-rot with age.

I recently put one on an 8-V that tested out perfectly and then lasted just long enough to get the bus about 10 miles from home.

Could be it was a bad part but I was not confident I was correctly rotating inventory either, when I got home I threw out the other 3 I had.

Carry a spare but date it and discard it after 3 or 4 years.

Joe,

I knew there were two versions and I wanted the higher pressure parameters. My Liberty will hit 130 when cold every time and then settles down to about 120/125 after warming up. I have nightmares of tearing the bedroom apart after seeing your post!

Tom that is one of those jobs you worry about but after you have done it you walk away pleasantly surprised to learn it was not that bad.

The second time EriC and Deb did it to pull the defective one it was in and out in no time flat. They had the access hatch out in 1/2 hr! Sorry guys I owe you big time:o

There are other air governors available besides those manufactured by Bendix.... Sealco and Midland are two that come to mind, The Sealco unit is more user adjustable than the others. It is factory preset in cut in at 100 psi and out at 120 psi, but it can be end user adjusted to cut in from 95 to 135 psi and a rebuild kit is available for those that like to tinker, maybe it's more what you are looking for: http://www.sealcocvp.com/prod/catalog/001500/index.htm
