View Full Version : Pneumatic stays for bay door

I do not know what these are called. They are the pneumatic stays that hold the bay doors open. I have several to replace. I have the replacements but do not know how they are attached. There is a 1/2 inch bolt and nut at each end.
But the stays seem to have a snap like fitting in each end.
Question:
How do I remove and replace the stays? Thanks

Lloyd,if you look closely there is a wire that fits around the ball that is inserted into a socket,move the wire and the socket will be released from the ball.If you take the end that is on the door off you can then turn the cylinder counter clockwise and this will screw out the other end which is mounted in the bay.this can save a lot of time as some mounting locations are almost impossible to get to.Someone on this board buys these cylinders in bulk(I think Dale) that would be the lowest cost.Be careful and support the door well before you start this project.

Lloyd, on the last order they raised the price to 22. With freight to you guys, I didn't think you would pay for them. Sorry, everything seems high now. I think Peter had a buy location or Prevost is the go to, maybe.

I already have the replacements. The previous owner has spares of almost everything on the bus. I just could not figure out how they came off and were installed.
I will try to find the wire that jack14r mentioned, tomorrow. Thanks.

Lloyd,
Bring everything to TN and we can all learn. If it is normal there will be about 20 guys gathered around doing your repairs.
Some are slow and lazy, but for the price you can't complain.

Marathon is cheaper than Prevost for the air shocks. I just bought a bunch.. :(

Hi Warren. Did you get them @ Marathon in So. California (Beaumont) or from Oregon. Have you checked out their new facility yet?

I ordered them from Coburg and had them shipped.. I was fixin to buy them from PVML, but the parts guy was kind enough to tell me that they bought them from Marathon & marked them up.
If you can get the same gas struts for 20 bucks, you are way ahead of the deal I got !
To quote someone more in the know than I, they were not sure as to the actual Marathon experience that most of the techs would have. Many probably came from National RV, which as you most know has gone belly up.
They are auctioning all their tools, machines, coaches, partial coaches the whole enchilada. It is located in Perris fwiw.
So to fairly answer the question Gary, I have not been to Beaumont yet. I am due for service, and will likely use PVML this time anyway.

Until I find my Pre I'll still have to drive my Dolphin...but with National having gone belly-up...I may as well see if I can find a few addon's that didn't come in my Dolphin..but did in higher end National's...

I really debated about posting on this, but felt that it was important to know. We don't have a lot of Marathon owners out here in the CA area, so perhaps it's not really an issue.
I used the Beaumont Marathon facility the first day they opened. Going that soon turned out to be a mistake. As Warren mentions, most of the technicians there came from National RV, and although experienced, I don't call them "Marathon quality", at least not yet.
I had my internet satellite installed at Marathon. To their credit, they worked very hard, all day long. Most of the install was done pretty well. Better than I would have done, because they were able to remove the ceiling panels, and run wires hidden from the satellite up to the front cabinets where the satellite hardware is located.
My only beef at this point is the mess that the wiring was left in the front cabinet. if you've seen Marathon's most of the time, wires are neatly layed out, labled etc.
In my case, they shoved the equipment into the cabinet, and the wires were a mess behind the unit. The other thing that was really wrong, is that instead of finding the right power source, they unplugged my techlink system from it's dedicated power source, and then put it's power plug into a switched power bar that we installed to turn the satellite components off/on. The end result is that a week later, I go to look at my techlink guages, and there's nothing! No video. Because it was now in a switched outlet, my guages would only work when I turn on the satellite components.
I will say that I spoke with the manager, and he did everything correct to rectify the situation, including promising to send someone out to my hangar to fix the issue. I declined because I had already fixed it. I think in time that this Marathon shop will be a real benefit for us down here in Southern CA. But for now, if you have work done there, I suggest watching and keeping on top of things. Heck, we make the same suggestion while having service done at Prevost in Mira Loma too, so hopefully this isn't a big issue.
Just as an example, here's a picture of the wires of my satellite box after the initial install. Sorry for the quality, it's from my cellphone ....

It is really unfortunate that you pay "Quality Pay" for what you hope is quality work and wind up with a mess like that.
Some folks never quite get the message that "Pride of Ownership" is more than just words and so supervision is always required.This is evidence that the guys doing the work had none.
