Awright.

There seem to be a few things in common in this group and we haven't gotten to the music stuff yet.

My vote for Heavy Metal Music is the sound of the Turbo winding up with a close second being the start of a diesel engine in the morning.

Any seconds? (I know where this one is going).

No sense voting...the clear heavy metal winner is the sound of an 8V92, or Mango wiping out a generator baffle.

As per Jon, my vote is with the 8V92 for the good sounds.
Cummins, Cats, even a Series 60 sounds like a girlie engine in comparison.

About 1955 my dad to my brother and I to see an Allison Engine powered dragster. I think the guys name was Art Arfons and he called his dragster The Green Monster. Now that was some "heavy metal" that darn near made me wet my pants. It was the first time I felt the ground shake from a big engine and I've never gotten completely over it. That is a good memory, thanks.

In the early 60's, there were a couple of Allison V12's mounted in old tractor frames that were making the rounds of the tractor pulls.
The sound was incredible when they went to work.

1942

Art just died on December 3.

I saw the green monster at the Detroit Auto show in Cobo Hall very impressive at the time.

Chaloupka got it right this time. Tough to beat the sound of a 4360 cubic inch Pratt & Whitney cranking. And the smoke.....the beautiful blue smoke.

They don't make em like that anymore. How would you like to do a tear down and rebuild on that!
I wonder if the Smithsonian has any sound tracks of the old engines?

Nothing like the sound of an old Chris Craft flat head 6 about 6am in the morning on a "flat as glass" lake. Does that count as "heavy metal" music?

Jim C and Brian E:
In retrospect, you are right. I don't have much time on the super big radials but quite a lot on an 1820. Yep, you are right. Hit the starter, prime, count 5 blades, Mags on and: smoke, noise, vibration. Life is good.

Rick, I think that's more like sweet music.:)

I personally think that 410 sprint cars are the most efficient way to turn money into noise......

I kind a like the sound of my twin dual pipes blowin at 3500 rpms on my Porsche Sport 310 hp opposed six cylinder. It just sounds sweet.

I would have to go with the 8V71 or the 6V53. No turbo to muffle the pure two stroke sweetness.

And the only thing worse is either one of them running backwards.

6V53
1956

Here is a video of a dragster with an 8V71 running a sub 8 quarter.

Turn the sound way up on this one.

Sweet as the dual row radial engines sound, the V12 Allison (or Merlin) has to set the gold standard for aircraft engine sound. Or super modified tractor. They used to have frac pumps in the oil field powered by V12 Allison engines. Pretty sweet. They replaced them with International Harvester Solar Gas Turbines. Also sweet, but not practical.
