In Idaho on our way west...

We've been parked at a campground for two days. I just noticed a small wet spot under the rear of our coach. It appears to be coming from the bottom of the fuel filter.

How serious is this?

Andrew.

Any time you have a wet spot under the coach that you cannot identify rule one is to identify it.

On your 8V92 there are endless possibilities ranging from something as harmless as some oil dripping from a slobber tube (crankcase vents) or as you suggest from a loose or leaking fuel filter gasket, to coolant dripping from an air box drain.

No matter what it is you do need to verify the source and what is leaking before anyone can determine the severity of the problem. There is no substitute for early detection of problems because some can get real serious real fast, and others are nothing to be concerned about.

This is Jon answering on Fast Roger's computer.

the leak is from the bottom of the secondary fuel filter...

Was it changed recently?

If you're lucky it's just a bit loose.

If you decide to take it off to check the gasket, make sure you close the 2 petcocks feeding the filter.

Another source is having two gaskets on the filter. Sometimes when they are changed, one sticks to the top of the filter housing and when you install the new one, the two rubber rings will seal for a bit, but then leak. Generally, they leak right away, but the fuel on the bottom of the filter is just where it is settling to. It must be on the housing or from around the top of the filter.
